Board and Commission Appointments

Tuesday, December 30, 2008

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of meetings for me as Mayor-elect.  In order to have many appointment recommendations ready for the first of the year, I have been meeting with representatives of each of the city’s boards and commissions. We have discussed the make-up of each group, what each member brings to the table, and what skills might be added to make their group stronger. We also talk about goals, direction, communication with the council, and projects on the horizon with which they may be involved.

Meanwhile, I have also been reviewing the applications for each opening. For some there are many, for others, just a few. Current vacancies are listed on the City of Northfield’s website. If there are still openings after the first of the year we will advertise this information.

In an attempt to make my decisions more transparent, here is the process that I will follow:

First I will talk to at least one member of each board/commission, preferably the chair, to discuss the make up of the group. I will then review applications and identify individuals that might be a valuable addition. I may contact them to further understand their motivation and interest in the position. Finally, I will provide, for the council, a brief explanation on each candidate, outlining my reasons for their recommendation at this time.

Here are some of the principles I will be following to make these decisions. I will seek to:

  1. Promote diversity (gender, race, age, address, background, perspective, skills, and experience)
  2. Promote individuals with expertise or passion for the topic
  3. Promote new leaders
  4. Promote individuals who can maintain a broad vision for Northfield while working to further the goals of the council and the citizens

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time for our city and to those who have expressed an interest in serving in the future! We are a city that is blessed with tremendous citizen involvement. I look forward to a successful and progressive tenure as your mayor.
